Project Overview: The project includes widening and resurfacing 1.25 miles of roadway on SR 682 (through The Plains) to construct a two-way left turn lane. There will be some realignment of approach roads and existing storm sewers will be reconstructed.
State Route 682 provides a link from US 33 north of Athens to the west side of Athens, making it a cut-through route. Existing traffic levels through The Plains have outgrown the two-lane highway making it a safety priority. A safety study of SR 682 through The Plains was conducted in April of 2004 and updated in June of 2008. State Route 682 is a two-lane highway and only has a left turn lane at the McDonal's entrance. In order to make turns off of SR 682, vehicles must yield to oncoming traffic in the through travel lanes which has contrinuted to multiple rear end crashes. Furthermore, public roads intersecting with SR 682 do not meet current design standards. There are also deficiencies in lane width and intersection conditions which has also contributed to a number of crashes. Finally, there are a number of unsignalized access points and private drives which increase driver confusion and have been the cause of several crashes.
