1. Specification:

Item 514.02 C&MS

Item 708.01 & 708.02 C&MS

Supplement 1084

2. Sampling and Inspection Requirements:

Apply the prime coat to new structural steel inside permanent buildings at the fabricatorís facility. If inside permanent buildings, the fabricator may perform year-round abrasive blasting and painting.

Perform abrasive blasting and painting in the field from April 1 to October 31. The Department will not issue a time extension due to adverse weather during the month of April. The plans may require additional work limitations for specific bridges or projects.

The Engineer may inspect the initial application of the prime, intermediate and final coats. If the Engineer discovers defects, adjust the method of application to eliminate the defects then continue applying the coat.

A pre-qualified non-sag, non-shrink epoxy must be used for caulking Refer to Item 514.02. Certified paint systems can be found at OMMís Qualified Product List (QPL)

Only material that is approved as a Qualified Product may be used. To verify, refer to Qualified Product List (QPL) on the OMM website http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/ConstructionMgt/Materials/Pages/QPL.aspx. Suppliers who are interested in approval of their products should follow the requirements defined for this product on the list website.

The districts are asked to obtain check samples of bridge paint batches at the beginning of the project. Sampling should be done as follows:

*A sample of each component for every project will be sent to the Office of Materials Management at the above address, chemical section, to the attention of Randy Davis. Batches under 50 gallons do not need to be sampled.

*The sample size should be a one pint metal paint can of each component.

*The cans should be labeled with the manufacturer's name, product brand name, batch number, project number, district number, and date sampled.

*Districts will enter check samples in CMS, generating a sample id. number for each component.

Safety Requirements and Precautions:

Comply with the applicable safety requirements of the Ohio Industrial Commission of OSHA. Provide Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) at the preconstruction meeting for all paints, thinners, and abrasives used on this project. Do not begin work until submitting the MSDS to the Engineer.
