Guardrail materials and associated guardrail components shall be produced by a certified plant as per Supplement 1042. A list of certified producers and the material they produce is available at the OMM website

2. Sampling and/or Inspection Requirements:

Producer/suppliers will direct ship guardrail materials to ODOT projects. A TE-24 Shipping Notice must be received with the shipment. A bill of lading defining the components incorporated into the construction material item shall accompany the TE-24. If a TE-24 is not received, the material shall be rejected as not coming from a certified supplier. Report incorrect materials or documentation to OMM.

All guard rail, washers, back up plates, buffer sections, bolts, nuts and other accessories shall be inspected after delivery to the project site for dimensions, markings and condition. Dimensions shall comply with the current Standard Drawings. Further dimensions and tolerances are shown in the Addendum section. (Field)

All beam elements, ET's, Type 2 beams and buffer sections, washers, back up plates, bolts, nuts and accessories shall be galvanized. Galvanized beams, buffer sections, back up plates and accessories shall be checked by means of magnetic meter for thickness of galvanized coating on both sides of the item.

Coating shall be free from injurious defects, such as blisters, flux and uncoated spots. It shall be smooth, free of beading or sharp projections along the edges and shall adhere tenaciously to the surface of the metal. Test for adherence by prying or cutting using considerable pressure with a stout knife by paring or peeling. No peeling permitted.

Each beam element shall be identified by the following:

Name or Brand of the manufacturer.

Identification symbol or code for heat number and coating lot.

AASHTO specification number.

Class and Type.

Markings shall not be placed at such a location that they will be obscured after erection, or in a manner the brand will be conspicuous to people in traffic. Markings placed on the traffic face of the beam shall be placed in the valley of the center corrugation, shall be die-imprinted with letters and numerical not exceeding one-half inch in height.

Marking materials shall be such as to resist obliteration during storage, transportation and erection. Markings for end sections and back up plates may be on durable tags securely attached to each section or bundle.
