2. Sampling and/or Inspection Requirements :
Material shall be sampled and inspected within 24 hours of receipt to determine whether any damage has occurred and that the material is in usable condition.
Sampling and preparation shall be conducted as fast as possible in order to avoid undue exposure of the material to the air. Samples shall not be taken from broken packages.
Samples shall be taken in triplicate if required, one for the department, one for producer and one retained for ninety days or until material is accepted. Samples of quicklime and of hydrated lime shall be immediately sealed in airtight, moisture-proof containers.
Samples for hydrated lime for masonry purposes and for soil stabilization shall be 5-lb (2.3-kg) min. sizes.
Samples for quicklime for soil stabilization shall be 10 lb (4.5 kg).
Lump, Granular or Powdered Material In Packages: At least 1% of the packages shall be sampled. Remove select packages from the total lot. Remove at least 1 lb. from each package sampled. The samples shall be thoroughly mixed and quartered, and the triplicate, if necessary, for testing shall be taken from the material selected and prepared.
Lump, Granular or Powered Material in Bulk: Material shall be selected so that it will represent an average of all parts of the pile, truckload or railcar and shall not contain a disproportionate share of the top or bottom layers. This material shall comprise at least 10 shovelsful taken form different parts of the shipment from holes dug approximately 1ft (304mm) below the surface. The total quantity taken shall not weigh less than 50lb (23kg) for the shipment.
The samples shall be thoroughly mixed and quartered, and the triplicate, if necessary, for testing shall be taken from the material selected and prepared.
If the material is intended to be used for stabilization of soil, contact the Office of Geotechnical Engineering at least (90) days prior to use for determination of the quantity to be submitted. (District)
