2. Sampling and/or Inspection Requirements:
All inorganic zinc primers used must be on the Department's list of certified paint manufacturers at: http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/ConstructionMgt/Materials/Pages/ChemicalInformation.aspx
The method of acceptance in the field is by QPL at
All components intended for the Project or Purchase Order shall be inspected upon delivery. (Field)
Material not so listed must be rejected and removed from the project site.
Containers shall be unopened, marked with manufacturer's name, coating trade name and number, batch number, date of manufacture, expiration date, specification number, mixing instructions and equipment clean up instructions.
Dry pigment, prior to mixing, shall be dry and loosely packed.
The vehicle shall show no thickening, curdling, gelling, gassing or hard caking.
The zinc dust pigment or zinc pigmented portion shall be easily mixed by a high shear mixer into the remaining component(s) to form a smooth, uniform material free from lumps or other objectionable characteristics.
Thinners, only recommended and supplied by the coating manufacturer, shall be clean and clear.
Materials not meeting above requirements shall be rejected and removed.
Material that can be identified as a Qualified Product (QPL) and fulfills the field inspection requirements may be used immediately. If the material does not fulfill the requirements, then it shall be rejected.
Use of material past its expiration date will not be allowed.
The districts are asked to obtain check samples of bridge paint batches at the beginning of the project. Sampling should be done as follows:
*A sample of each component for every project will be sent to the Office of Materials Management at the above address, chemical section, to the attention of Randy Davis. Batches under 50 gallons do not need to be sampled.
*The sample size should be a one pint metal paint can of each component.
*The cans should be labeled with the manufacturer's name, product brand name, batch number, project number, district number, and date sampled.
*Districts will enter check samples in CMS, generating a sample id. number for each component.
