PROPRIETARY PRODUCT REQUEST APPROVALS

Please refer to this link:

To meet the need for nationwide uniformity of standards for signs, signals, markings and other devices on or adjacent to streets and highways, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) publishes the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  The Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) is the State manual adopted by the ODOT Director of Transportation to establish standards for traffic control devices in Ohio in general conformance to the national manual.

Patented or proprietary materials, specifications, or processes may be included in a contract when, among other conditions:

  • No equally suitable alternate exists.
  • The item is essential for compatibility with existing highway facilities.

A request and justification are submitted by the maintaining agency via the Proprietary Product Request form to ODOT’s Office of Roadway Engineering (ORE). The request includes the model and/or manufacturer and an engineering justification that details why the proprietary item is necessary.

The ITNow Proprietary Product Requests application streamlines this process by moving Ohio from a manual process to an online process that not only allows participants to create requests online, but view and track submitted requests online as well.

The only thing required by non-ODOT participants is a MyODOT account and a modern web browser.
