Highway Embankments as Levees

FHWA has issued a memorandum providing guidance on highway embankments being certified for use as levees or flood control structures.  To view or download this memorandum, click here.

Culvert Material Selection Spreadsheet

We have created an Excel spreadsheet to assist in the culvert durability design and structural design of metal and concrete conduits.  This spreadsheet can be downloaded by clicking here.

As a supplement to the above spreadsheet we have provided a Power Point presentation that covers some of the basics of culvert material selection.  To download this presentation, click here.

Culvert Design Flowchart

We have created a flowchart to assist in culvert design.  The flowchart is set up in a step by step format and it makes references to the L&D manual.  It is available in Acrobat format and can be download by clicking here.

Box Culvert Headwalls

UPDATE 1/7/10: The .dgn file of the Design Data Sheet was updated to reflect additional concrete placed at the box culvert invert as shown in Section B-B.

UPDATE 10/20/06:  The design data sheets (dgn and pdf)  have been updated.  The updated version can be downloaded below.

UPDATE 9/26/06: The plan insert sheets and design data sheets have been updated to MicroStation Version 8.  Also, the Bar List Excel spreadsheet has been updated to fix a calculation error.  The updated versions can be downloaded below.

We have created plan insert sheets (dgn), design data sheet (dgn), and a MS Excel sheet (for bar schedules) to facilitate the design of box culvert headwalls.  Instructions can be found on the first sheet of the general notes of the Design Data Sheet.  All three of the files can be downloaded at the following link:

The design data sheets can be used without a bar schedule if desired.  This design data sheet can be downloaded at the following link:

Supplemental Storm Sewer Design Guidance & Example

We have created supplemental storm sewer design guidance in an attempt to clarify the process. The document simplifies the design of storm sewer and provides all of the equations that are used for the design. It is available in Acrobat format and can be download by clicking here.
