National MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) 2009 Edition - Published by FHWA

 

Description 

The national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). FHWA published the 2009 Edition of the national MUTCD December 16, 2009. It may be viewed on-line. 

Legal Authority

The Ohio Revised Code (Section 4511.09) requires that ODOT adopt a manual for a uniform system of traffic control devices that conforms to the system approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This national MUTCD is that system.

The FHWA also has rules and regulations that require that traffic control devices used on certain roads conform to the standards and guidelines established in the national MUTCD within two years of publication in the national MUTCD.

Miscellaneous Information

Proposed changes to the national MUTCD are published periodically for review and comment through the the Federal government's Federal Register system. Information about such notices will be posted on this website.

In accordance with MUTCD Section 1A.10 (and OMUTCD Section 1A.10) FHWA periodically grants "interim approvals" for a new device or procedure. These are based on the "results of successful experimentation, results of analytical or laboratory studies, and/or review on non-U.S. experience with a traffic control device or application." Information about interim approvals granted by FHWA is also be accessible from this website.
