Environmental Sustainability Program

Sustainable Transportation: Accessibility policies and practices, when implemented on the landscape, create or maintain vibrant social, economic, and environmental conditions that can be maintained indefinitely.

The Environmental Sustainability Program works with state, federal, and non-government agencies to develop the most applicable and efficient policies and practices that promote a better than before environment. The program assists staff in developing and implementing policies and practices that reduce energy use, waste and promote thriving natural resources all the while ODOT works to provide access to essential goods and services, economic opportunities, transportation choices, and livable communities for all Ohioans. Ultimately, sustainability is about making the most mindful and efficient use of all resources.

The ODOT Environmental Sustainability Program works closely with the ODOT Green Team. The Green Team is a group of representatives from several Divisions within ODOT that: identify, research, prioritize and implement the best environmentally sensitive practices at ODOT.

The Green Team is committed to assessing and improving ODOT’s efficient use of:

  • Energy
  • Water
  • Land
  • Natural Resources

To reduce our environmental impact, we are actively working in the following areas:

  • Increase the use of green technology
  • Set energy and water conservation standards
  • Increase the use of renewable energy sources
  • Decrease the use of hazardous or harmful chemicals
  • Engage in smart land use policies that promote robust ecosystems
  • Measure and reduce air emissions and work towards statewide climate change planning
  • Work towards all employees and contractors using materials wisely through reduction, reuse, and recycling
  • Incorporate sustainability considerations and concepts into project planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance

The best ideas for how ODOT can have the greatest environmental benefit comes from those individuals that work in our offices, garages and outposts everyday. Suggestions to the Green Team can be made on the Green Team Sharepoint Site (ODOT employees only).

An outside perspective is also critical for determining the best possible options for moving ODOT towards greater environmental responsibility. Individuals and organizations outside ODOT can submit their ideas and suggestions for a greener ODOT to Matt Perlik at matthew.perlik@dot.state.oh.us or 614-466-1937
