Apply for Funding...

Ohio makes $4 million available each year to assist communities in improving safety for students to walk or bicycle to school. Funding is available for a variety of activities including Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement Evaluation and Equity.

Prior to requesting infrastructure or non-infrastructure funds, communities are required to develop a school travel plan that address the most effective strategies to improve safety in those communities.

Decision-making is always difficult. Every project submitted for funding was identified as a need in the approved school travel plan.

Projects are competitively selected based on percentage of students expected to benefit, traffic speed, crash rate, economic status and delivery of past ODOT projects.

Assistance is available for planning activities. Please click on Develop Your SRTS Program in the right-column menu to learn more about how to get started.

Infrastructure Application Tips:

Review ODOT approved School Travel Plan for most effective countermeasure. $200,000 to $400,000 - Per community

Work with your ODOT District SRTS Coordinator to assure the community and ODOT are in agreement with proposed countermeasure

Obtain  a certified cost proposal. Cost overruns will be the responsibility of the applicant

STP Development:

  1. The School Travel Plan Process is available at: Develop your SRTS Program
  2. We will not be soliciting for School Travel Plan Development. If a community is interested in obtaining assistance to develop a school travel plan, please contact your District SRTS Coordinator

Non-Inf Application Tips:

Review ODOT approved School Travel Plan for most effective countermeasures:

1 to 10 Schools: Up to $15,000
11 to 25 Schools: up to $30,000
26 or more Schools: up to $60,000
(there may be exceptions for specific projects)

Work with your ODOT District SRTS Coordinator to assure the community and ODOT are in agreement with proposed countermeasure

Develop a detailed cost estimate. Cost overruns will be the responsibility of the applicant. It helps to let us know how you will sustain the program if you are not funded in subsequent years.
