Chapter 2 - Roles and Responsibilities


An individual in each district is designated to assist IRIS in efforts to inform ODOT District personnel of the Department’s research activities and encourage participation in the program. The role of a District Research Liaison includes the following functions:

  • Facilitating the efficient flow of information between the districts and IRIS regarding research, development and technology transfer opportunities and activities.
  • Assisting in the identification of District research, development, and technology transfer needs.
  • Assisting in the identification of “experts" in the district to serve as subject matter experts.
  • Assisting in the coordination of assistance on research projects as needed (e.g.: test sites, traffic control, site checks, etc.)

A member of the IRIS team serves as the IRIS District Coordinator. This individual will work closely with the twelve District Research Liaisons to coordinate district participation in the research program. The IRIS District Coordinator also organizes and tracks all district lead projects in regards to the project’s relevance to the strategic research plan. District Research Liaisons should include the IRIS District Coordinator on all research correspondence to aid in the efficient development and management of district research projects.
