Chapter 4 - Program Development: Local

4.0 GENERAL

The emphasis of ODOT’s research program is on investigating local issues facing Ohio’s transportation system. The process of developing the research program involves the collection of research needs and solutions from various entities, including: ODOT employees, FHWA, university researchers, consultants, local governmental agencies and private industry. ODOT utilizes a strategic approach to develop the research program. This helps to ensure that:

  • research is focused on ODOT’s needs;
  • both long and short term goals are identified;
  • research is performed as near as possible to the time that a solution is needed; and
  • major projects, or portions thereof, are sequenced in a logical manner.

To encourage a robust research program, ODOT has three avenues through which project ideas of local importance can be developed:

  • Strategic Research Plans
  • ODOT Partnered Research Exploration Program
  • Student Study Program
