Research workerThe Office of Research & Development (R&D) supports the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) by developing and managing a robost annual research program that is:

  • responsive to the Department's strategic initiatives;
  • rooted in economics;
  • takes advantage of emerging technologies;
  • provides information and technology for management policy decisions;
  • provides mechanisms to share research results with customers; and
  • produces practical results that have a strong possibility of being implemented.

R&D administers the State Planning and Research (SP&R), Part 2 program. All research activities for ODOT as well as the department's activities with the Transportation Research Board and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Research Advisory Committee are coordinated through R&D.


Moving Forward Newsletter

The 2009 Volume 2 edition of Moving Forward is now available. Included in this edition:

  • R&D issues a special RFP and a call for student study problem statements. For additional information see pages 1 and 2.
  • Development of a web-enabled system to track research projects from conception to completion and throughout the various phases of implementation has started. For additional information on the Applied Research Management System (ARMS) see page 3.
  • TRB issues a report that outlines what it will take to implement the results of SHRP 2. For additional information see page 6.
  • R&D is examining research focus areas to align with 21st Century Task Force strategies. For additional information see page 9.

Research Manual

The Research, Development and Technology Transfer (RD&T2) Manual of Procedures is approved  by the Federal Highway Administration and maintained by R&D. This manual defines the process for developing, managing, and conducting research for ODOT as well as the roles and responsibilities of key players. The manual is incorporated into all research agreements.

SP&R Part 2

Information on ODOT's SP&R Part 2 program is available on-line. View information on active and proposed projects as well as strategic research plans for various ODOT program offices. Information on the department's strategic research focus areas and the Cooperative Research Seminar is also available.
