Turnpike Mitigation Program

The Ohio Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, has developed a Turnpike Mitigation Program to minimize the impact to communities that are adversely affected by the Turnpike's presence.

The Turnpike Mitigation Program will allocate approximately $5 million per year, with no more than $1 million awarded to a single project.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of Turnpike and ODOT representatives.

Project types eligible for consideration  may include:
  • Bridge preservation
  • Minor Resurfacing
  • Noise Walls
  • Drainage Improvements
  • Other Improvements Required for Public Transportation

Eligible projects must be located within one mile of the Turnpike and demonstrate a negative impact to the community caused by the Turnpike.

Projects must be sponsored by a local government. Project sponsor funding participation is required for consideration.

Applications will be accepted through January 31, 2014, for projects to be built in state fiscal years 2015 and 2016.

Applications are currently closed.

On Tuesday, June 3, 2014, ODOT announced awards totaling more than $4 million to fund the first projects under the Turnpike Mitigation Program. The projects include bridge preservation, minor pavement resurfacing, drainage repairs and other transportation improvements. Introduced in December 2013, the program received 41 project funding applications from counties, townships and municipalities, which were reviewed by a committee comprised of ODOT and Turnpike representatives.

Through the Turnpike Mitigation Program, ODOT is also offering nearly $5 million for the detailed analysis and construction of noise walls in several communities. The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission must approve the recommended projects since construction will take place within the Turnpike right-of-way. The commission is scheduled to discuss the noise wall projects at its next meeting on June 16 2014.

In an effort to improve the application process and project delivery, ODOT will host an Turnpike Mitigaiton Program overview session and provide information about other funding opportunities. Click here to register.
