William Brian Burgett
President & C.E.O., Kokosing, Inc.
Mr. Burgett started working summers for the family construction company as a laborer on underground utility work while in high school. Upon entering The Ohio State University in 1969, he and his father, started Scioto Steel Erectors to due structural steel erection and reinforcing steel installation. Brian worked summers as an ironworker and during the school year as an estimator. Upon earning his civil engineering degree in 1973 he moved back to Fredericktown and joined Kokosing Construction full time. In 1973 Kokosing had been in business for 22 years and was a $7 million dollar per year building and underground contractor. Brian soon took over all field operations and in 1977 took the company into bridge and treatment plant construction with the acquisition of the Columbus based Wander Construction. In 1978 scraper dirt capabilities were added. In 1981 Brian took over as President when his father Bill decided to retire and pursue other interest. Over the next several years Kokosing continued to grow adding asphalt paving and plants, concrete paving and plants, sand and gravel plants, limestone quarries, heavy industrial maintenance and marine construction. Simultaneously geographic expansion was leading the companies into West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Washington D.C., and occasionally other states. Today Kokosing Inc. is the largest heavy civil contractor in Ohio and surrounding states with an annual volume exceeding $1.3 billion and has 3500 employees.
In addition to his leadership of Kokosing, Mr. Burgett is a strong advocate for the Construction Industries interest on a State and National political level as well. He has also been instrumental in the introduction of the "Project Partnering" concept to ODOT, many municipalities, and private owners.
