Presidential Pathways
The Presidential Pathways Scenic Byway looks at the lives of two presidents: William Henry Harrison (1841) who was a renowned Indian fighter and whose family owned slaves in Virginia, and his grandson, Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893), an advocate of civil rights for Native and African Americans. The byway reveals what they helped to develop, what they might have seen, and what they left behind. William Henry Harrison had to drop out of college in order to support himself after his father died. Benjamin Harrison graduated from Miami University in 1852, and has an ongoing scholarship named after him which supports top scholars attending Miami, no matter their families’ finances. These two men lived in the 19th century, but their legacy formed and informs Southwest Ohio even today.
The Presidential Pathways Scenic Byway runs from Lawrenceburg Road in Miami Township in Hamilton County on the south to Loop Road in Hueston Woods State Park at the Butler County - Preble County line on the north.
