ODOT is involved in the planning, building and maintenance of the transportation infrastructure within the state of Ohio.  One of ODOT's main responsibilities is the 'State System' of roads, which include State, U.S. and Interstate Routes, except the Ohio Turnpike.  While the state system represents a considerable number of roadway miles throughout the state, local roads (county, township, city streets, etc.) -- and certain responsibilities on some state system roadways -- are handled by local county, township and municipal authorities.

ODOT is not a licensing, regulatory or enforcement agency for vehicles. In Ohio, many vehicle and driver issues are handled through the Ohio Department of Public Safety, which includes these eight divisions: Administration, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Medical Services, Homeland Security, Highway Patrol, Investigative Unit, and Office of Criminal Justice Services.

Issues regarding commercial motor carrier vehicles, DOT and ICC registration numbers, safety issues, and hazardous materials, are administered at a state level by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO)'s Transportation Department and at the federal level by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) division of the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT).  Please consult the PUCO and FMCSA links for more information and assistance with motor carrier/trucking related matters.
