Twin Beech shortly before retirement.

Beech C-45H airplane reached the end of its life. The bureau looked for a replacement. Partenavia P-68 Observer was selected for its outstanding visibility, stability, safety, slow flight capability, and economical maintenance.

Since the Twin Beech was substantially customized for photogrammetric missions, it was not easy to be replaced. E.g. the custom made bottom window in the nose of the airplane allowed the pilot to see the ground below. View through the bottom window. Good ground visibility helped maintaining a straight flightline.

During the aircraft selection process ODOT representatives inspected several airplanes. Examining the details.

Partenavia P-68 Observer was purchased. The plane was equipped with a Jena LMK1000 camera.
