One of 12 transportation districts in the State of Ohio, The Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 serves the northwestern Ohio counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot (see garage contact information listed below.)
The district is headquartered in Lima, Ohio, Allen County. Operating out of headquarters are the departments of the deputy director, business and human services, highway management and planning and engineering.
Kirk Slusher, P.E., assumed the position of deputy director for ODOT District 1 on January 10, 2011.
Slusher began working for the Ohio Department of Transportation in District 1 as a design engineer. He worked in both design and planning until 1997 when he assumed the District 1 Planning Administrator position.
During his tenure as the Planning Administrator, he effectively managed the district's capital allocation budget which averages $30 million per year, led the preliminary development efforts for all of the district’s major projects including the U.S. 24 Fort to Port relocation and expansion project, the reconstruction of I-75 through Allen County, as well as several major interchange reconstruction projects.
The district is charged with maintaining approximately 3,200 lane miles of state and federal highway, maintaining over 800 bridge structures and for planning new construction which enhances, improves or expands the transportation system within its eight-county area.
Each of the eight counties within the district conducts highway maintenance activities from garage facilities located in the cities of Lima, Defiance, Findlay, Kenton, Paulding, Ottawa, Van Wert and Upper Sandusky.
