New Deputy Director to lead ODOT District 1

COLUMBUS (Monday, September 28, 2009) - Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jolene M. Molitoris today announced that District 1 Deputy Director Tim Burkepile has chosen to step down from his position, returning to construction management.

Director Molitoris then named Leonard Brown, an administrator in ODOT’s District 6 office and a former official with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), as the new Deputy Director in the Lima office, which serves the northwestern Ohio counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot.

Mr. Burkepile has been with ODOT since 1971, serving in various technical, management and leadership roles with highway projects and district programs. He was appointed District Deputy Director by Governor Strickland in 2007. He will be assuming a technical role within the department’s division of construction.

“Tim’s background and experience in construction and his technical knowledge of ODOT’s field operations were tremendous assets for ODOT’s major highway corridor work in northwest Ohio,” said Director Molitoris. “I appreciate his continued service with the department and to the people of Ohio.”

To make the transition seamless, Director Molitoris appointed Mr. Brown to the Deputy Director position, effective today.

Currently serving as the Production Administrator in ODOT’s District 6 office (Central Ohio), Mr. Brown had served more than six years as Deputy Director for ODOT’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). Under this successful statewide program, Mr. Brown and his team developed and conducted transportation training for local governments across Ohio.

Prior to coming to ODOT, Mr. Brown served six years as Division Administrator in the Ohio Division for the Federal Highway Administration. There he directed a multi-level staff which provided leadership, assistance, and guidance to multiple entities within the transportation community in Ohio. Prior to this appointment, he held the title of Assistant Division Administrator in Indiana; Chief, District Operations in California; Contract Administration, and Construction and Maintenance Engineer in the former Region 5 Regional Office (Chicago); and several field engineer positions in Louisiana, Iowa, and Ohio.

“Leonard brings such a broad wealth of transportation experience to northwest Ohio,” said Director Molitoris. “His success in reaching out to local communities through the LTAP program gives him a great understanding of the needs of our local transportation partners. His time with FHWA gives him great insight to the value of investment in a true multi-modal transportation system.”

ODOT’s District 1 is charged with maintaining approximately 3,200 lane miles of state and federal highway, maintaining more than 800 bridge structures, and planning of new construction and transportation investments which enhance, improve and expands the multi-modal transportation system within its eight-county area.
