Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 Winter Operations Update
The following is an update regarding snow and ice operations on state highways within the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 which includes the counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot. This report is issued periodically during the winter months.
January 6, 2014
-Approximately 90 ODOT crews throughout the eight-county area are currently operating and have been out yesterday and all night in response to the current weather event.
-Highways throughout the district are currently extremely icy and will likely remain so through Wednesday. Local county sheriff’s departments have issued snow level warnings. Please check with local departments on the status of travel.
-Additional precautions are being taken with equipment. In addition to winter blend diesel fuel, fuel conditioner is being added to the fleet’s gas tanks to reduce the chance of the fuel gelling which can occur in extremely cold temperatures.
-Operators are being instructed to keep salt spinners operating at medium speed to keep hydraulics warm. This event is a plowing operation only at the moment due to blowing and drifting which continues to occur and due to the extreme temperatures which negates the effect of salt and other material. Blowing snow and wind chill will continue to be a challenge for the next 18-24 hours.
