Rail, traffic signal coordination work to occur Wednesday
Railroad, ODOT personnel to install and test equipment along Ohio 309 at Hartzler, Cable Road
LIMA (Tuesday, December 10, 2013) Work to install and test traffic signal equipment along Ohio 309 (Elida Road) at Hartzler and Cable Roads will take place tomorrow and could cause a slight disruption to traffic.
Kirk Slusher, Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 1 deputy director, said the project is a joint effort between the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC), the ODOT traffic department and the CF&E Railroad.
The work involves coordinating existing traffic signals with the railroad crossing gates and lights at the two locations. With the rail and road systems synced, an approaching train will activate the traffic signals essentially preventing excessive road traffic from approaching the crossing, while also allowing traffic already at the crossing to quickly clear.
The testing of the equipment could result in a temporary disruption of the traffic signals. ODOT personnel will direct traffic during the operation to keep the intersections operating safely.
There is no anticipated effect to traffic on Elida Road.
