Clinton St. Bridge

“Brew” haha on the banks of the Maumee

Foundation of former brewery discovered

The following is an update regarding the progress of the Clinton Street bridge project, downtown Defiance. The $8.3 million project will completely replace the bridge which carries state Routes 15, 18 and 66 over the Maumee River. The bridge closed Feb. 25, 2019 for approximately nine months. The project is scheduled for completion July 2020.

What's happening now and in coming days . . .

Bridge from 1880sFirst, a sandstone footer from the 1880s was unearthed during bridge demolition. Now, the brick foundation of a former brewery was found on the river’s west bank during the relocation of a sanitary line. According to local historians, this undated photo of the original 1880s bridge shows the brewery which is believed to be the brick building to the right of the smoke stack and is in the spot where we found the foundation. This photo was provided to the contractor by a local. Thank you to them for sharing this with us.

  • It may not be the Mississippi, but the Maumee River can be just as imposing when it decides to be. River levels are currently over the causeway which has halted everything happening in the river. Crews have been working on Saturdays when conditions allow, but work will not occur this Saturday due to the river level. And we're not optimistic that work will occur on Monday and Tuesday of next week as more rain is predicted. Once we can, we'll be back at building the fingers branching off the main causeway on the south side so we can begin constructing the new piers. The causeway creates an access point to the bridge from the river for crews and their equipment.
  • By the end of next week the last two original piers are expected to be demolished. We continue to drill the shafts for the new piers on the north end of the bridge and expect to be pouring their concrete foundations late next week.
  • Speaking of demolition, this photo of the last bridge beam falling into the river was provided to us by the contractor. This occurred on Thursday of last week.

questions of curiosity from observers of the project

Q. Will the light fixtures that were removed from the bridge prior to demolition be reused?

A. Yes. The fixtures were carefully removed and stored with the intent of installing them on the new bridge.
