State Route 2 Rest Area to Open for Memorial Day

Travelers can enjoy a “green stop” as the summer tourism season begins in Northwest Ohio

BOWLING GREEN (Friday, May 28, 2010)Just in time for the start of summer, holiday travelers now have the chance to use the Ohio Department of Transportations’ (ODOT) newly renovated rest area facility on State Route 2, just east of State Route 358 in Ottawa county.

The updated facility includes new plumbing, electrical fixtures, roofing and flooring. The toilet areas have been expanded and now include a separate family restroom.  Energy efficiencies have been added such as on-demand water heaters, low-flow toilets and more efficient heating and cooling systems. The renovated building is also ADA compliant.

Another “green” addition to the facility will be the installation of a wind turbine, to supply a portion of the power to the rest area. This will be the first of its kind in the state of Ohio. ODOT expects the turbine to be installed in July.

David R. Dysard, district deputy director for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 2, said “Statewide there are 44 rest areas being upgraded to not only better serve our customers, but also to be more energy efficient using some of the latest energy technologies,” said Dysard. “ODOT is committed to using environmentally-sensitive practices in our operations and pilot new green initiatives. ODOT is embracing environmental stewardship and reducing energy consumption.”
