The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 3 is proposing the closure of the primitive rest area in Fitchville Township, off State Route 13.
ODOT is faced with the responsibility to maintain and implement improvements to best serve the needs of all Ohio's citizens utilizing precious state resources.
The proposed closure lies in the cost effectiveness of maintaining this rest area, which equates to $27,000 in yearly costs.
This is the last primitive rest area in north central Ohio. It is experiencing difficulties in complying with Ohio Environmental Agency requirements for treatment and disposal of sewage and wastewater. This rest area will eventually need costly upgrades to comply with health regulations.
The location also experiences a high frequency of accidents as it is adjacent to a curved intersection of two state-maintained routes.
The rest area has a small vehicle capacity and cannot adequately accomodate large trucks or campers.
