West Side Update
T-minus 7 hours and 30 minutes.
No we are not ready to launch the next shuttle, but ODOT is going to open a new temporary interstate highway that we just started building 48 hours ago after a tanker fire under the bridge at 270 and 70 on the west side.
At 4 AM the final layer of asphalt was being placed on the new temporary road that will carry EB and WB I-70 traffic over I-270.
Once cool enough, we will stripe the new road and then open it to traffic.
Also overnight, the ODOT traffic team placed 10 overhead guide signs, black on orange, to help guide drivers around the construction.
ODOT Statement attributable to Director Jerry Wray:
"ODOT and our contractor partner, Shelly and Sands, are working hard to re-open I-70 and ramps to I-270 on the west side of Columbus. We're pleased with the great progress, but there is much work still to do. As we work to replace and repair the damaged bridge, I encourage everyone to slow down, pay attention to the road and drive safe. We want everyone to make it home safe at the end of the day. I know this is a major inconvenience, but we appreciate your continued patience as we resolve this difficult situation."
