I-71 South Traffic Shifted This Weekend
Interstate 71 – (NEW) – Weather permitting, I-71 south will be reduced to one lane between SR 61 and US 36 starting at 10 p.m. Friday. By 9 a.m. Saturday, two lanes of I-71 south will be open.
This weekend marks the beginning of a new traffic configuration for both directions of I-71 between US 36 in Delaware County and SR 61 in Morrow County. Last year, ODOT started a $50 million project to add a third lane in both directions on I-71.
By Saturday morning, southbound motorists will notice the two lanes have been pushed over to the right. This is so the two lanes for I-71 north can be switched to the southbound lanes in a few weeks.
No date has been set for when northbound traffic will be switched. First construction crews have to install close to eight miles of concrete barrier to separate the two directions of travel.
The installation of the concrete barrier begins Monday night, March 24 at 8 p.m. There will be overnight closures on I-71 south all week long so motorists should expect delays.
All lanes will be open by 6 a.m. daily.
The first of three projects to widen 25 miles of I-71 in Delaware and Morrow Counties was completed last year between SR 95 and the Richland County Line. The other two projects are expected to be complete by Fall of this year.
