New Traffic Pattern Coming to I-270 and Cleveland Avenue
Southbound Cleveland Avenue traffic to use new ramp
Starting Monday morning, I-270 east drivers will exit to Cleveland Avenue south on a brand new ramp. Instead of the one lane ramp, motorists will use the new two lane ramp and stop at a new traffic light before making a right turn.
The ramp to Cleveland Avenue northbound will not be impacted.
The new ramp will have two lanes for right turns only onto southbound Cleveland Avenue.
The light for northbound Cleveland Avenue traffic will always be green and left turns will not be permitted.
The new traffic signal on the south side of the interchange also means southbound Cleveland Avenue travelers will have to stop at the red light to allow I-270 east traffic to exit. The picture below shows the location of the new signal where southbound traffic will stop.
Here’s how traffic will be impacted this weekend to switch traffic to the new ramp.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
8 PM: Cleveland Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction at I-270 until Monday morning to install new pavement.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
9 PM: The ramp from I-270 east to Cleveland Avenue north and south will close to allow crews to move barrier wall and switch traffic to the new ramp. The detour is I-270 east to SR 3 to I-270 west to Cleveland Avenue.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
5 AM: All lanes and ramps at I-270 and Cleveland Avenue will be open. The ramp from I-270 east to Cleveland Avenue south will be in its new configuration.
By switching traffic to the new ramp, the contractor can build the other half of the ramp.
After it’s complete, I-270 east traffic will use the same ramp to exit at Cleveland Avenue, and turn right or left to go south or north.
This two-year, $9.3 million construction project will raise and replace the Cleveland Avenue bridges over I-270 and reconfigure the ramps at the I-270/Cleveland Avenue interchange.
