Permanent Ramp Closure Just One Week Away
I-270 east traffic will use new ramp at Cleveland Avenue
Did that sign say permanently?
Where will I exit?
How will I get to Cleveland Avenue?
These are just a few of the questions that ODOT will hear when drivers see a new black-on-orange sign (below) at the I-270/Cleveland Avenue interchange. This sign will alert motorists on I-270 east exiting to go north on Cleveland Avenue towards Westerville, that the ramp is closing permanently in about a week.
Four months ago, crews started reconstructing the interchange to improve safety. The old ramp had traffic exiting the interstate merging with vehicles trying to enter the freeway. Vehicles were essentially jockeying for the same spot of pavement.
The new configuration eliminates that weaving and merging with one ramp and a traffic signal for both directions of Cleveland Avenue if you are eastbound on Interstate 270.
Beginning Thursday, October 30, weather permitting, drivers will use the new ramp which has two turn lanes each for northbound and southbound traffic on Cleveland Avenue. Closing the old ramp and opening the new one will occur Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Work to reconfigure the ramps from northbound Cleveland Avenue to I-270 east and west will be complete by Thanksgiving. Next year, crews will raise and replace the Cleveland Avenue bridges over the interstate.
The $9.3 million project is expected to be complete late Fall of 2015.
