West Side Crossover Starts Tomorrow Morning
New traffic pattern for eastbound I-70 drivers
COLUMBUS – (December 21, 2016) Weather permitting, drivers on Interstate 70 at 270 will switch into a new traffic pattern by tomorrow morning.
Starting tomorrow, eastbound I-70 traffic will have to ‘cross over’ onto the westbound side. While traffic is on the westbound side, crews will be constructing the additional lane for eastbound I-70. This phase of construction is expected to last until Spring.
Graphics below illustrate how drivers will get safely through the work zone. One graphic focuses on the work zone near Hilliard Rome Road; the other portrays the traffic pattern just before Wilson Road.
Here are the details of how traffic will be impacted tonight while crews make the switch.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21
Interstate 70 (West Side) – (NEW)
8 PM: I-70 east will be reduced to one lane between Alton Darby Creek Road and Wilson Road.
9 PM: The ramps from I-70 east to I-270 north and south will close. The detour is I-70 east to Wilson Road to I-70 west to I-270 north or south.
5 AM: All lanes and ramps will be open in their new configuration.
Starting Thursday morning, I-70 eastbound traffic will ‘cross over’ to the westbound side just before Hilliard-Rome Road. They will travel in this pattern for several miles and not cross back over until just before Wilson Road.
Here are key points to remember:
Slow down—all travel lanes through this construction work zone are not the standard 12 feet. Some lanes are 11’.
All exits are maintained during this ‘crossover’ phase.
There is no change to the exits from eastbound I-70 to go south or north on I-270.
Use extra caution on the exit ramp from I-70 east to I-270 north because of the curve on the ramp which existed even before construction started.
If you are coming from I-270 and want to head east on 70, you will not have to enter the crossover.
The $47 million widening project that started last year is constructing an additional lane in both directions on I-70 between I-270 and Hilliard Rome Road. It’s expected to be complete in October 2017.
