Widening Underway at Busy Delaware County Interstate Ramp
varies depending on workers
DELAWARE – If you travel on Interstate 71 north out of Columbus
towards Delaware County, you have probably seen all the orange signs, portable
speed trailers and construction equipment between the rest area and the old
weigh station. Construction just started on the project to widen the exit ramp
from Interstate 71 north to Routes 36/37.
A traffic study by
Outlet Mall developer Simon-Tanger determined that a larger ramp capable of
handling additional vehicles, including mall traffic, was needed to maintain
safety and ease congestion.
The new outlet mall is
set to open in three months.
During construction, drivers
on I-71 still have all three northbound lanes that are now shifted towards the
median so crews can work in the shoulder. All turning movements on the exit
ramp to 36/37 are maintained, however the length of the turn lanes has been
shortened. This ramp configuration will be in place for three weeks.
project is also using new dynamic speed limit signs in the work zone.
zone speed limits have historically been 10 mph reductions for the entire
length of a project for the entire duration of the project, regardless of
whether workers are present.
the passing of HB 487 (Mid-Biennium Budget Review Bill) that was signed by
Governor John R. Kasich this past June, ODOT now has the ability to post
variable speed limits in work zones.
means the work zone speed limit will be reduced when crews are working, and
return to a faster speed when they are not.
Instead of 70 mph, the
speed limit in this work zone is five miles per hour less because lanes are
shifted and closer to the southbound travel lanes. When workers are present,
the digital speed sign will flash yellow to alert drivers the speed limit has
been reduced to 60 mph.
The ramp widening project, weather permitting, is supposed to be complete prior
to the opening of the outlet mall this June.
