I-270/US 23 Construction Begins Soon
North Side Fix begins September 16
COLUMBUS – (NEW) The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) says construction on the third most congested interchange in Central Ohio will begin Monday September 16.
The I-270/US 23 Interchange is a three year project that will improve safety and enhance capacity by reconfiguring the ramps and adding turn lanes in both directions on US 23. Two northbound express lanes on US 23 will be constructed under the surface roads that will extend just north of I-270 until south of Northwoods Boulevard North.
“This is one of the fastest growing areas in Ohio,” said Jerry Wray, ODOT Director. “As metropolitan Columbus continues to grow and expand northward, we have to accommodate that growth if we are to maintain it. Doing so helps create and maintain jobs.”
It was a year ago that funding became available to move the Northside Fix Project forward. A department-wide effort to make ODOT more efficient resulted in more than $600 million for construction projects statewide. The Governor’s Jobs and Transportation Plan, signed into law in April, also created more than $3 billion to be spent on major new capacity highway projects in the next six years.
“Through the hard work of transportation leaders and the support of our residents and businesses, many of whom voiced their support for keeping the project in the forefront, we are now able to break ground and celebrate the improvements that are to come,” said Dr. Lou Goorey, Worthington City Council president.
During construction, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on US 23. Because there are multiple phases of construction, ODOT has created a project website, www.270-23.com. You can sign up to receive traffic alerts so you know the latest traffic patterns before you go.
The website also features live cameras where motorists can see traffic conditions at nearby interchanges and intersections that you might consider as alternate routes.
The$72 million project is scheduled to be complete in 2016.
