Transportation Partners Celebrate Opening of New Southern Gateway
Seven Lane Interchange expected to be open by Friday Morning Commute
Grove City (Thursday August 16, 2012)The Ohio Department of Transportation along with the Mayor of Grove City, area business leaders and even high school band members gathered on top of the State Route 665 Bridge to celebrate the new interchange at I-71 in Grove City.
Called the new Southern Gateway, the I-71/SR 665 Interchange has been transformed from a two lane bridge to an interchange with seven lanes that will improve safety and increase capacity.
“The opening of this interchange signifies more than just an investment in transportation,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. “It signifies an investment in Grove City, its people, its businesses, its economy, and the future.”
Construction began a year and a half ago on the new $22 million interchange. It was the final phase of a three-phase transportation investment in Grove City. The first phase widened SR 665 east of the interchange. The second phase relocated Haughn Road to the west.
“This is a tremendous day for Grove City and all of Central Ohio,” said Grove City Mayor Richard L. “Ike” Stage. “The 12-year effort resulted in a state-of-the-art interchange maximizing safety, capacity, efficiency and opportunities for job creation. We owe significant gratitude to a list of dedicated partners whose early vision recognized the value of the interchange as the best urban-industrial setting in the region.”
Seven different transportation partners helped pay for the construction of the I-71/SR 665 Interchange. They include the City of Grove City, ODOT, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Organization (MORPC), Ohio Public Works Commission, federal earmarks, the Ohio Department of Development and area property owners.
Weather permitting, all lanes and ramps at the interchange will be open by 5 a.m. Friday. There is still some work to complete such as pavement markings, landscaping and painting before construction is complete.
This work may require temporary lane closures or restrictions, but prior notification will be provided.
A map to help motorists drive through the interchange is available on both the ODOT and Grove City website,
