SR 315 Slope Stabilization: Project History

DECEMBER 3, 2008: ODOT invited the public to view several proposals for a new project along State Route 315 in Delaware County concerning the embankment from Jewett Road to just north of SR 750.  Over 75 people gathered at the Liberty Township Hall in Powell to see the proposals, ask questions, and make comments.

A flyer from the meeting including a comment sheet can be found by clicking here.

Several options were studied to stabilize the bank.  These options include various concrete retaining walls and/or natural options that contain vegetation and would blend in to the existing scenery over time. Some of the alternatives also look at installing turn lanes on SR 315 at the intersection with SR 750 even though the primary focus of the project is to stabilize the slope. More information on each of the alternatives and various options for retaining walls can be found below.

A response to comments document is also available here.

Alternative 0
Constructs a retaining wall and uses vegetated reinforcement along the east side of SR 315. The existing alignment of SR 315 would not change and no turn lanes would be constructed.

Alternative 1
Constructs a retaining wall and uses vegetated reinforcement along the east side of SR 315. SR 315 would be widened to the west to allow left turn lanes on SR 315 at the SR 750 intersection. In addition, a 13-23' tall retaining wall would be constructed along the west side of SR 315.

Alternative 1B
Constructs a retaining wall and uses vegetated reinforcement along the east side of SR 315. SR 315 would shift west and be widened to allow left turn lanes on SR 315 at the Sr 750 intersection. In addition, a 13.5-26' tall retaining wall would be constructed along the west side of SR 315.

Alternative 2
Constructs a retaining wall and uses vegetated reinforcement along the east side of SR 315. SR 315 would shift to the east and be widened to allow left turn lanes on SR 315 at the SR 750 intersection. In addition, a 12-23' tall retaining wall would be constructed along the west side of SR 315.

Alternative 3
Constructs a retaining wall and uses vegetated reinforcement along the east side of SR 315. Similar to Alternative 1B, SR 315 would shift west and be widened to allow left turn lanes on SR 315 at the SR 750 intersection; However, the project limits would be shortened. In addition, a 14-23' tall retaining wall would be constructed along the west side of SR 315.

Stabilization Options

Different options were studied to stabilize the bank. Those options included various concrete retaining walls as well as natural vegetation options that would blend in to the existing scenery over time. Links to information on vegetated reinforcement (soil bioengineering) and different concrete retaining wall options are below.

OCTOBER 14, 2012: ODOT held a second public meeting to share a preferred alternative with the public and get comments on the proposal.  The preferred alternative includes stabilizing the river bank both north and south of SR 750 using natural vegetation.  The project also includes safety improvements at the intersection of SR 750 and SR 315 including reducing the steep grade on SR 750 west of the intersection and additng left turn lanes on SR 750.

The preferred alternatives can be viewed below:

FEBRUARY 25, 2013: ODOT held a public meeting to share updated information about the project proposal. The project now includes left turn lanes in all directions at the SR 315/750 intersection. Construction is expected to begin in 2013.

The presentation from the meeting can be viewed here.
