Darke County Ohio State Alumni Club Reaches 15 Years of Service
In Adopt-A-Highway program
Sidney (Wednesday, March 30, 2016) – The Ohio Department of Transportation District 7 would like to recognize The Darke County Ohio State Alumni Club for reaching a milestone as a member of the Adopt-A-Highway program. The group has been picking up litter for 15 years along a stretch of US 127 in Darke County.
The group’s current chairman, Bill Barga, signed them up in 2001. The alumni group wanted to do their part to keep Ohio beautiful. Barga typically completes the pickups three times per year, sometimes with a helper. It takes about five hours to complete a pickup and they collect about five bags of trash each time. If there is someone helping Mr. Barga, they share coffee and donuts 30 minutes before the start time and the pick ups go a little faster.
The majority of litter found along their route includes cans, food wrappers and recaps from tires. The group has also found rings and CDs. They say it’s their way of giving back and keeping the roadway looking clean.
ODOT, District 7 expresses its sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Darke County Ohio State Alumni Club for their commitment and dedication. Our appreciation also goes to all of the Adopt-A-Highway volunteers who have maintained their adopted roadsides.
The Ohio Department of Transportation maintains the state's largest man-made asset--the transportation system.
