The Gels Home Recognized for 15 Years of Service
With the Adopt A Highway Program
Sidney (Wednesday, February 1, 2012) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 7 recognizes the Gels Home for providing 15 years of service to the Adopt-A-Highway program. The Gels family has been picking up litter along a two-mile stretch of SR 118 in Mercer County for more than 15 years.
In February of 1997, Ralph and Janet Gels signed their first contract to adopt and clean this section of roadway and they are still going strong today. Their children, Toni and Scott, helped when they first began and now their grandchildren volunteer.
Typically, four to six people take part in each clean up. It takes approximately two hours to complete the entire two mile stretch with ten to thirteen bags of litter collected. The Gels strive to clean their section of roadway three to four times a year. Most of the litter they collect consists of cans and plastic or glass bottles.
Janet stated, “We are fortunate to live right next door to the Ice Cream Dairy Land. After a really hot day of cleaning up others’ trash, we get cleaned up and go over and indulge in ice cream!”
ODOT, District 7 expresses its sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Gels Home for their commitment and dedication. Our appreciation also goes to all of the Adopt-A-Highway volunteers who have maintained their adopted roadsides
