ODOT Unveils Speed Advisory System for State Route 562
Proactive measure alerts motorists to slow/stopped traffic on westbound corridor
Lebanon (Tuesday, April 13, 2010) – Unveiling its newest tool to safely facilitate traffic on a well-traveled highway corridor, the Ohio Department of Transportation today announced the implementation of a Speed Advisory System to monitor the flow of traffic on westbound State Route 562 near the Interstate 75 interchange. The system will be deployed beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 14.
A proactive measure to reduce rear-end collisions, the system is designed to disseminate real time traffic information to motorists traveling westbound SR 562 during peak drive times. With data provided by three speed sensors located on SR 562 and the ramps to north and southbound I-75, the system utilizes two changeable message signs to alert motorists to slowed or stopped traffic.
This system, the first such permanent system to be deployed by ODOT, provides traffic speed information to motorists as traffic slows or stops. Based on the data provided by the speed sensors, the signs’ two-phase message will indicate “traffic xx mph ahead”/slow down” or “traffic xx mph ahead/prepare to stop.”
To provide adequate warning to those approaching the I-75/SR562 interchange, these message boards are strategically located on either side of the SR562/Paddock Road interchange.
“The safety of the traveling public is of the utmost importance to the Ohio Department of Transportation, and we do our best to keep our roads safe. Hopefully this new tool will assist us in enhancing our goal of ‘Target: Zero’ for any safety hazard,” said District 8 Deputy Director Hans Jindal.
