Bridge Replacement Delayed
(Thursday, June 5, 2014) – Contractors
for the Ohio Department of Transportation have temporarily halted
construction on the state Route 125 bridge replacement in Adams County.
Crews from DGM, Inc.
closed S.R. 125 in the Blue Creek Community in late March in order to replace
a bridge located immediately east of Township Road
312 (Riley Hollow Road). A full closure of
the route was deemed necessary due to safety and constructability concerns,
whereby the scale of replacing structural beams and abutments in the bridge
alignment would not allow traffic to move safely or easily if it were
maintained with part-width construction.
As part of this, the
steel I-beams required for the new structure are constructed in a two-step
process under design specifications exclusive to their fabrication, and this
method of construction is limited to only one supplier. Although the
contractors had ordered and scheduled to take delivery of the beams by May
15, delivery has been delayed until mid-June by the manufacturer responsible
for their fabrication.
contractors made every attempt to assure the beams would be delivered as
scheduled, the situation is beyond our control," said Vaughn Wilson, ODOT
District 9 Deputy Director. "However, we will be working with the
contractors to expedite construction once they are able to return to the
With the beams
scheduled to arrive June 16, the contractors will resume operations then and
work toward reopening the route in mid- to late August.
