Emergency Project Scheduled For S.R. 7
Route To Remain Closed For Bench Clearing
Chillicothe (Thursday, July 22, 2010) – Following a landslide along state Route 7 in Lawrence County yesterday, the route remains closed at Chesapeake, and officials from the Ohio Department of Transportation have determined that an emergency project to remove unstable rock will be necessary.
On Wednesday, July 21, a massive boulder gave way from the hillside adjacent to the westbound lanes of state Route 7, falling onto the route’s passing lane near the 1.0-mile marker and County Road 124 (Tallow Ridge Road). Subsequently, S.R. 7 West was closed between its junction with U.S. 52 at the 17th Street/Nick Rahall Bridge and S.R. 527 at the 6th Street/Robert C. Byrd Bridge, and maintenance crews from ODOT’s Lawrence County facility began working to break apart the boulder and remove debris from the highway.
While these efforts will continue until the rock is cleared, ODOT will also expedite a Type A Emergency contract to clear additional boulders or rock from the hillside and ledge that appear to be unstable or loose. Currently, contractors are scheduled to mobilize their crews Friday, July 23, to begin work immediately.
“Safety is our priority, and our team of highway management staff and construction engineers have been working diligently to expedite this project so that we may restore the route to traffic as quickly as possible,” said District 9 Deputy Director James A. Brushart. “Of course, it will be necessary for the safety of the traveling public that the westbound lanes remain closed while the contractors and maintenance crews continue their efforts.”
Although a schedule to complete the work and reopen the route has yet to be determined, it is expected that the route will be closed through the end of next week. Once all of the debris is cleared from the highway, ODOT officials will further assess the pavement and shoulder to determine if any additional repairs are warranted.
While the westbound lanes of S.R. 7 will remain closed throughout this project, motorists will continue to be detoured through the village of Chesapeake via Third Avenue and C.R. 1(old U.S. 52) to C.R. 144 (Charley Creek Road) and U.S. 52. The eastbound lanes of the route should not be affected by this closure.
