Highland-134 Remains Closed North Of Buford
Chillicothe (Monday, May 24, 2010) – State Route 134 in Highland County remains closed north of Buford due to collapsed culvert that occurred as a result of flash flooding.
The route was closed Saturday, May 22, at the 8.39-mile marker, just south of S.R. 131 and north of S.R. 286, after severe storms wreaked havoc on many local roads late Friday night.
Officials from the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9’s planning and production departments have been on site today, May 24, to investigate the culvert and surface pavement to ascertain the extent of damage incurred by the flooding. Although a full report of these investigations has yet to be completed, the department has already programmed a construction project to replace the structure this summer.
This project, which is scheduled to sell late this week, will necessitate closure of the route during construction; however, the district's hydraulics and bridge engineers will determine this week if the S.R. 134 can be reopened prior to the start of the upcoming construction project.
Until such time that a full determination can be made regarding the current condition of the route, the closure will remain in effect, and motorists will be detoured via S.R. 131 and S.R. 138. Motorists are also reminded that crossing any closed route is strictly prohibited.
