Ironton-Russell Bridge Demolition
Main Span of Former Bridge To Be Dismantled Monday
Chillicothe (Sunday, January 22, 2017) -- Phase 1 demolition of the former Ironton-Russell Bridge is under way, and contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation are prepared to take the first major step toward dismantling the Ohio River crossing in Lawrence County.
On Monday, January 23, crews from Brayman Construction Corporation will remove the main span of the former bridge that is situated off Campbell Avenue in Ironton and Riverside Drive in Russell, Kentucky. The structure, which has been separated from the piers and cantilevered segments, will be lowered to a barge by cranes and transported off-site for salvage.
Crews will mobilize at approximately 7 a.m., and although the length of time to lower the span will be contingent on different variables, it is anticipated that it will take four hours. Throughout the day, the river channel will be closed to waterway traffic.
Members of the media are invited to photograph and video the event; however, access to the approaches and the structure will not be permitted. While there will be no set staging area, media may choose to be positioned at the boat dock off Center Street in downtown Ironton for optimal viewing.
