Jackson-35 Scheduled To Reopen This Evening
Closure To Be Imparted Again Thursday
Chillicothe (Wednesday, February 17, 4:30 p.m.) – As contractors on an emergency excavation and slide repair project wrap up their first day of work, U.S. Route 35 East in Jackson County is scheduled to reopen to one lane of traffic this evening.
Crews from Stable Construction have been working throughout the day today, February 17, to cut, dislodge and remove large boulders that rest along the hillside adjacent to U.S. 35 East. While both eastbound lanes have been closed today, it is anticipated that the route will be open to one lane by 6 p.m. tonight.
However, due to the scope of the project and the size of the boulders that still need to be removed, the contractors will close U.S. 35 East again tomorrow, February 18, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until approximately 6 p.m. Eastbound traffic will be detoured by way of U.S. 35 at Chillicothe to U.S. 23 South to Piketon, to S.R. 32 East to Jackson to U.S. 35.
Although the westbound lanes have not been affected by the rock slide, these lanes will be closed for intermittent periods of up to 15 minutes when the largest sections of rock are likely to fall. The periodic closures are needed to assure motorists’ safety as debris could cross the median area to the westbound side of the highway when they falling.
While both eastbound lanes will be closed throughout the day and traffic will be detoured, westbound traffic will be held and maintained by ODOT and officials from the State Highway Patrol; at all other times throughout the day, westbound traffic will not be restricted.
The emergency excavation project became necessary after a rock slide occurred last Wednesday, February 10, in the area just east of Caves Road, approximately six miles east of the Jackson-Ross County line. Field review by ODOT engineers and geologists determined that other rocks or boulders along the hillside may be unstable and should be removed.
Stable Construction was awarded a Type A Emergency contract this week to remove the rock and repair the ledge and hillside between the 6.0 and 7.0-mile markers, adjacent to U.S. 35 East.
