Chillicothe (Wednesday, December 16, 2015) – Winter may be just around the corner, but the threat of inclement weather won’t deter contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation and construction at the Lake White Dam rehabilitation project in Pike County.
Since work began in September, crews from Sunesis Construction Company have been busy with the relocation of Crooked Creek and construction of a coffer dam that will be used as part of the lake drain component of the project, as well as reconstruction of the boat ramp and dock near the Lake White park office off state Route 551. While this and other work will continue in the weeks to come, the next major step will be the start of the bridge replacement on S.R. 104, which is currently reduced to one lane between S.R. 552 and S.R. 551.
On Monday, January 4, S.R. 104 will be closed for contractors to begin demolition of the existing structure. In addition, S.R. 551 will be closed between its junction with S.R. 104 and C.R. 93 (Bricker Road), near the park office. Both closures will remain in effect through the duration of construction, and while these routes are closed, through traffic will be detoured by way of U.S. 23 and S.R. 32, and local traffic to the Lake White region will be detoured via S.R. 552 and S.R. 220.
The Lake White Dam Rehabilitation and Roadway Improvement Project is a joint effort between the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Department of Natural Resources to reconstruct the Lake White dam and make long-term risk reduction improvements to the 4,200-foot earthen dam, as well as to replace the existing bridge over the spillway on S.R. 104 in Pike County.
In part, the project calls for improving the dam to ensure regulatory requirements, reinforcing the west bank of S.R. 104, completing the lake drain, armoring the upstream face of the dam with riprap, replacing the existing bridge on S.R. 104, reconstructing the highway by widening S.R. 104, constructing turn lanes at S.R. 551 and S.R. 552, and improving the intersection of S.R. 104 and C.R. 105 (Forest Hills Road).
ODOT awarded a contract in late July to Sunesis Construction for approximately $31.7 million, and the project is targeted for completion by late fall 2016.
