Culvert Project Under Way
Contractors will move
into major construction next week
Chillicothe (Monday, May 22, 2017)
is under way for a culvert replacement on state Route 141 in Lawrence County,
and contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will move into the first
major phase of the project early next week.
Crews from DGM, Incorporated are replacing a culvert over Sugar
Creek that is located adjacent to Township Road 208 (Branch Sugar Creek
Road), between County Road 52 (Sugar Creek-Johnstown Road) and C.R.
5 (Elkins Road) in the Kitts Hill area. The existing cast-in-place concrete arch
structure will be replaced with a 7X7-foot, precast concrete box culvert.
With construction having begun, traffic is being
maintained by flaggers when crews are at work; however, the route is scheduled
for closure on Tuesday, May 30, and the closure will be in effect for up to
In accordance with the district’s detour justification process,
a full closure of the route was deemed necessary due to constructability
concerns that were identified during the design phase. Included in this were the
existing structure’s alignment with Branch Sugar Creek Road, the stream
channel alongside and at the culvert, and concrete abutments on either side
of the roadway which would not allow for traffic to be moved or routed safely
into one lane during construction.
“By closing the route to traffic, we can assure the safety of
motorists and expedite the complete timeline in a manner to diminish the
overall impact to motorists and residents,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy
Director Vaughn Wilson.
While the route is closed, thru-traffic will be
detoured by way of U.S. 52, S.R. 243, S.R. 378 and S.R. 217; however, a local detour has
also been designated by way of Sugar Creek-Johnstown, Turkey Fork and Kitts
Hill High School roads.
DGM, Inc. was awarded a contract in the amount of $572,575 to
complete the project, and all work is anticipated to be finished in mid to
