ODOT, DGM Crews Clear The Way For Route To Reopen
U.S. 52 West anticipated to reopen to traffic tonight
Chillicothe (Sunday, April 12, 2015) – Sixty hours and 3,000,000 pounds of rubble later, a 1,500-ton boulder has been cleared from U.S. Route 52 in Lawrence County, and the route is likely to be reopened to traffic later today.
U.S. 52 was closed during the overnight hours Friday, April 10, after the massive rock slid off the hillside and onto the route’s westbound lanes near the Ashland, Ky. twin bridges at Coal Grove.
Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Lawrence County maintenance facility and DGM, Inc. were mobilized immediately, and working continuously since Friday morning, they have cleared the rock from the roadway.
“This has been a tremendous undertaking and one of great teamwork between our forces and our contractors, DGM,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson. “Both teams have done an outstanding job to expedite operations and clear the highway so efficiently and effectively, and they are to be commended for their efforts.”
As crews continue working this afternoon to clear the remaining debris and repair the median guardrail and pavement, it is anticipated that the westbound lanes of the route will be open to traffic tonight.
In the meantime, westbound traffic will continue to be detoured via the 17th Street (U.S. 52) bridge at Huntington, West Virginia, to I-64 and U.S. 23 in Kentucky to the 12th/13th Street twin bridges at Ashland, Ky.,
and eastbound U.S. 52 motorists will be restricted to one lane.
“We also extend our thanks to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the West Virginia Department of Transportation for their help to establish the detour during the closure of U.S. 52,” added Wilson.
