Preservation Project Gets Under Way
Ironton-Russell Bridge Closures Going Into Effect Next Week
Chillicothe - As a preservation project to rehabilitate the Ironton-Russell Bridge gets under way and daytime closure of the bridge begins next week, motorists traveling via U.S. Route 52 in Lawrence County are advised of periods of delay.
Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will enact daytime closure of the bridge beginning Monday, August 11, with the bridge closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays; the bridge will be open to evening and overnight travel each day.
“Although there will be a significant impact to motorists who use this bridge during the day, we have coordinated the contractor’s schedule to limit the periods of closure and minimize the impact as much as possible,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director James Brushart.
As the Ironton-Russell Bridge is closed during the day, motorists will be detoured via U.S. Route 52 and the Ben Williamson (Ashland, Kentucky) Bridge to U.S. Route 23. Those traveling U.S. 52 may encounter periods of delay as a resurfacing project between Hanging Rock and Coal Grove continues on U.S. 52. In addition, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will undertake a waterproofing project at the 12th Street (southbound) bridge to Ashland, which will also affect traffic as this project will require the bridge be reduced to one lane throughout next week. This project, though, has a 10-day window for completion, and it is anticipated that traffic on the bridge will be restored to two lanes by the end of the work day on Sunday, August 17.
“We have been in communication with officials from KTC, and although both projects will take place simultaneously, it is necessary that they continue according to their respective schedules,” said Brushart. “Moreover, the construction and traffic departments from both agencies will be monitoring the situation throughout the week to adjust timing and traffic patterns as needed.”
Armstrong Steel Erectors of Newark, Ohio, was awarded a contract in the amount of approximately $1.1 million to complete the Ironton-Russell Bridge preservation project, and the scheduled completion date is October 31.
During periods of closure, motorists will be detoured by way of U.S. Route 52 and the Ashland, Ky., bridge to U.S. Route 23, and throughout these projects, motorists using either of the Ohio River bridges should plan their routes accordingly and adjust travel times as needed, exercising additional caution in the work zones.
