Public Meeting Scheduled To Address Adams County Rest Area
Chillicothe (Monday, October 10, 2011) – The Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the department’s proposal to close a rest area in Adams County.
ODOT currently maintains a primitive-style roadside rest area on state Route 125 at Panhandle. As part of ODOT District 9’s facility maintenance program, these rest areas, which are not compliant with state and federal guidelines, are being addressed to determine their purpose, need and sustainability.
“While rest areas once served a much-useful purpose for motorists, today’s travelers are using alternative means of services or seeking more modern facilities,” said Wilson. “Given its present condition, age and the costs to upgrade for ADA compliance, the department wishes to dispose of this facility at Panhandle and proceed with the appropriate steps to close it.”
Deemed a primitive rest area, the facility located near the intersection of S.R. 125 and S.R. 136 consists of an antiquated, wooden, non-flush privy. There is considerable deferred maintenance, and the facility does not meet state and federal guidelines for continued operation.
ODOT officials will conduct a meeting to address the closure of the rest area on Tuesday, October 18, at the Liberty Township Hall, which is located at 8688 S.R. 136 in the Panhandle community. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at approximately 7 p.m.; the general public is invited to attend and provide comments about this initiative.
