Signal study project under way on Bridge Street
Operation Changed Slated This Week
Chillicothe (December 14, 2009)B As one of many projects to improve traffic through Chillicothe’s business district, the Ohio Department of Transportation has undertaken a signal study on North Bridge Street, between North Shawnee Lane and Hopetown Road.
“Working in conjunction with the city of Chillicothe, we are conducting a traffic engineering study to determine if the signal at Bridge Street and the Aldi and TSC stores meets guidelines for continued operation,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director James Brushart.
During this process, ODOT District 9’s traffic studies department is gathering information such as traffic history, site conditions, vehicle capacity, safety data and growth potential. In addition, they are monitoring traffic flow and movement at the intersection, and they will be collecting accident data and public response to the change in traffic control.
On December 17 the signals will be changed from stop-and-go operation to flashing mode, and these will remain flashing for 90 days while the study is under way. Once the signals are set to flash, Bridge Street traffic will have the right of way, and motorists exiting the stores will be required to stop, yielding to cross traffic; two-way stop signs will be installed on the intersecting drives as part of this project.
Since one section of the intersection is within the city and one section is outside the city’s corporation limit, the study is being coordinated between the Chillicothe engineer’s office and ODOT. Along with determining if the signal continues to meet warrants, the purpose of the study is to determine if its removal will improve traffic flow and better serve motorists.
Motorists are advised to exercise additional caution and pay heed to the new traffic control devices.
