South Pershing Avenue Reconstruction Slated To Begin
One-week closure to be in effect
Chillicothe (Monday, November 9, 2015) – With the north segment of Pershing Avenue in Portsmouth closed for reconstruction, contractors for the Portsmouth Gateway Group and the Ohio Department of Transportation will move operations to the road’s south segment and impart a temporary closure as part of the state Route 823 project in Scioto County.
On Wednesday, November 11, South Pershing Avenue will be closed at its junction with County Road 31 (Slocum Road) for Portsmouth Joint Venture (PJV) crews to excavate, fill and pave the new Pershing Avenue tie-in to the existing road. The closure will go into effect at 6 a.m., and it will remain in effect until approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 17. While it is closed, local traffic will be detoured by way of the Koppers Industries, Inc. access road to the south of Pershing Avenue.
The north leg of Pershing Avenue was closed at Haig Street in late October for PJV crews to clear and reconstruct this section for the relocation. This closure will be in effect through late December, and while it is closed, local traffic is being detoured by way of Marne Avenue.
In addition, Shumway Hollow Road remains closed between S.R. 335 and Swauger Valley Road for its relocation and interchange construction at S.R. 335, and blasting operations are under way throughout the corridor.
Motorists are reminded of the need for additional caution throughout the corridor, where crews and heavy equipment are moving in and out of the work zone.
In the spirit of a public-private partnership, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Portsmouth Gateway Group are constructing the new state Route 823, a 16-mile, four-lane, limited access highway from U.S. 23 at Lucasville to U.S. 52 at Sciotoville in Scioto County. The Southern Ohio Veterans Memorial Highway is the department’s first P3 project and the largest, modern earthwork project to be constructed in the state’s history.
