 History & Overview

 

Construction to replace the Ironton-Russell Bridge in Lawrence County is nearly complete, and the new bridge is now open to traffic! The project is the relocation of the bridge that connects Ironton, Ohio, with Russell, Kentucky, between Second and Jefferson streets in downtown Ironton and the U.S. 23 viaduct south of Russell.  Project Completion & Schedule

 

As the new Ironton-Russell Bridge has been opened to traffic, there should be little impact to motorists in the construction zones in Ohio and Kentucky. Crews will have finishing work to complete through the winter and spring months; however, traffic impacts should be minimal, and traffic on the new structure and intersecting roadways will be maintained at all times.

Along with completing the new bridge, the former Ironton-Russell Bridge has been closed to traffic, and demolition of the structure is under way. Phase 1 includes removal of the main span of the bridge by lowering it to a barge and moving it off-site for disassembly and salvage, while Phases 2 and 3 will entail disassembling portions of the cantilevered structure at the piers and detonating the anchor arms, simple span and piers. Phase 1 demolition was completed in mid-January 2017, and Phases 2 and 3 are now scheduled to be completed by early summer.
